The Masha Krupp Translation Group Ltd. (MKTG) values a clean and safe place to live and work for future generations, and our corporate philosophy espouses the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainable resource management. MKTG therefore reduces, re-uses and recycles, implements energy conservation practices and minimizes greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, MKTG encourages its employees and partners to do so through awareness raising activities.
MKTG’s Commitment to Clean Energy and Minimal Greenhouse Gas Emissions
On 5 September 2006, MKTG led its competitors in reducing GHG emissions by becoming the first translation company in Ottawa, and one of the only 11 organizations provincially, to participate in Pembina’s wind power program. The Pembina Wind Power program improves the environment by replacing conventional coal and gas generated (“dirty”) electricity with clean, renewable wind energy. MKTG has purchased renewable energy certificates, displacing the conventionally generated electricity consumed by our computers with an equivalent amount of clean, wind-powered electricity. The program took full effect in September 2007, and MKTG has now reduced its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions by 37,000 kilograms per year.
Taking Wind Power to the Next Level
MKTG is taking the next step in reducing its GHG emissions and phasing in wind power for all our electrical use. We have partnered with Bullfrog Power, who has helped us determine our electricity usage, and then matched it with green power injected onto the grid on our behalf. Bullfrog sources power exclusively from generators who meet or exceed the federal government’s Environmental Choice Program EcoLogo standard for renewable electricity.
Bullfrog Power comes from clean, emissions-free sources like wind power and low impact water power instead of carbon-intensive sources like coal and oil. On 01 September 2008, MKTG’s CRA Division was “bullfrogpowered.” By September 2009, MKTG was entirely “bullfrogpowered,” reducing its emissions footprint by approximately 58.5 tonnes of CO2 (the primary gas that causes climate change), 172.8 kg of SO2 (major contributor to smog) and 74.5 kg of NO (major contributor to smog) per year.
MKTG’s Commitment to Zero Waste
MKTG’s ultimate goal is to contribute nothing to the landfill. MKTG has recycled all paper waste since it began doing business more than 18 years ago. The destroyed documents, in the form of confetti-sized pieces, are transferred to a recycling facility, where they are returned to the marketplace in the form of recycled paper products. Our paper recycling contractor tracks the impact of recycling on the environment and issues Certificates of Destruction that attest to the number of trees saved by recycling our paper.
In 2010, the share of wood saved through MKTG’s paper recycling program amounted to 103 trees. Further, MKTG offices now exclusively use recycled paper containing 100% post consumer waste. All plastic, glass, metal and cardboard waste that is generated at MKTG is sorted and recycled through the sustained efforts of a committed team of MKTG employee volunteers. In addition, we have a staff member who runs a battery recycling program, and another member who recycles cellular phones.
